Route 66: Day 5
Couldn’t spend as much time in Missouri as I had hoped. Having taken time off at the ranch in Colorado I needed to catch up both distance and time.. off to Oklahoma I went.
In my family, the mention of Oklahoma brings two things to mind. First, that is where we lived first as a full family. I was born while my father was in Vietnam with the US Army. When he came home, we were based in Oklahoma for a while. I’m sure for mom and dad, those were challenging days. Integrating as a family, getting to know each other again, and for dad, putting the war behind him in his way.
The other memory, as children we did a camping trip in the region, and my sister Leslie freaked out when my parents crossed the border into Oklahoma from Missouri . She had recently seen the great thriller, Children of the Corn.
While I travelled through Oklahoma I had an interaction with a sheriff and his deputy. After a few uncomfortable moments, he was very helpful and directing me to continue West and watch out for the next counties where the sheriffs don’t like speeders: he also pointed out that my five light was burn out. He did not give me a ticket.
That being the fifth interaction with a police officer on the trip, I took his recommendation and drove Route 66 slow and easy rest of the state.
